Clara Oswin Oswald was born in 1885 in London, England. Her mother passed soon after, and her father eventually remarried. When he too passed, Clara's stepmother turned her out. She never saw the woman again, growing up instead on the streets of London, begging or working or thieving for food. When she was around eleven she met a young boy named Peter, orphaned like herself, and adopted him as a sort of younger brother. The two were immediately inseparable.

Over the next decade and a half Clara made money where she could, from factory work to serving pints to looking after children. She had a brief engagement to a schoolteacher, but he was killed in a street accident, and she had no further desire for marriage. Instead, she had constant dreams of getting out of London and traveling, maybe taking Peter back to America to find more of his family, or just seeing more of the world. So when she finally saved up enough money, she surprised Peter with something they'd talked about for years: two third-class tickets to a new life.
